On a beautifully bright and sunny day, the cold and blustery wind left the already tricky Witney Lakes course playing tough, so players needed to be on their game – and they more than stood up!

Our thanks go to Simon from Witney Lakes, club captain Jason, and the ladies on reception, who were superb hosts who could not have done more for us, a fantastic club who really see the value in junior golf! The Witney Lakes Classic saw an amazing start to the BJGT 2021 season – well done, everyone!

Junior Open Category

The Girls Junior Open Division led the way on the course with the early starts, and it was Chewon Cho who fared best, with her 83 good enough to claim the Gross title from Lilia Marklew in second, three shots behind, while Constance Bailey fired a cracking 71 to lead the Net Division from Lilia, who made it a daily double on runner-up trophies, just one shot back.
The Boys Junior Open off the whites saw Thomas White claim the Gross title, but only by a single stroke, with a fine 77, leaving Micah Blowers and home player, Josh Wilks-Hanley, tied on 78, and requiring a countback decision, which went to Micah over the back 9. Himal Gurung opened his 2021 account with a superb win in the Net Division as the only player to break 70, with his 69 one shot better than Thomas’s score, who added a runner-up trophy to his daily haul, while Alex Oddy was a further shot back in third.

13-14 Category

The newly formed Boys 13-14 Division playing off the yellow tee proved a very close affair, and was headed by Edward Mason for his first victory on the BJGT, with his round of 80. Again, this was only good enough for a single-shot victory over Will Bailey in second, and Bailey Hall (83) in third.

11-12 Category

The Boys 11-12 off the reds was even closer, as three shots separated the top six players: Maxi Moore came out on top of the countback required to separate him and Finley White after matching 78s, with Ambrose Eaves edging third place after his 79.

6 & Under Category

Brody MacIver made the trip down from Scotland worthwhile, as he claimed his first win of the new season with a fine round of 47, which left him 6-shots clear of Elijah (Biggie) Gibbons (53) in second.

7-8 Category

The 7-8 Division was deservedly headed by Marcus Karim, who only moved up from the 6 & Under Division this season; he started with a 7, but finished with an incredible level-par round of 36, which included four birdies. His playing partner, Freddie Buck, pushed him all the way, finishing with a fine 37 for second place, and Stella Walters played superbly, doing it for the girls and finishing in third place overall after a brilliant 39.

9-10 Category

There was an incredible finish in the 9-10 Division finish, which has only happened a couple of times before on the BJGT, as AJ Van Emmenis’s and Zahn Bopiah’s 41s couldn’t even be separated by countback at the top of the field, so required a sudden-death play-off in order to decide the winner.

AJ held his nerve to hole a 4-foot pressure putt on the first extra hole, claiming maximum points in the first OOM event of the year. Fraser Walters matched his sister’s third place finish, one-shot back in third, as just two shots then separated the next 3.

The BJGT now moves on to Dale Hill in two weeks’ time, where we hope for more of the same!
