Our first visit to South Essex

Our first visit to South Essex, and what a start for an affiliated event – fantastic reviews from everyone, as the club and Elite Performance Management put on a great event!

With the worst of storm Francis behind us, the weather was reasonably favourable, with light clouds, a gentle breeze and the rain holding off, which meant that scoring was always likely to be good and indeed it was!
With a 2-tee start, the younger age groups had a much earlier start than they are used to, as the 6 & Under players were first out on the Vixen Course, while the Junior Open players tackled Hawk first before following them round Vixen for the back 9.
Message from Elite Performance Management: “A big thank you from Elite Performance Management and South Essex Golf Club to all of the players, parents and supporters. It was a pleasure having you all at South Essex Golf Club.
We are delighted to have three of our Junior Aspire Academy members place 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Girls Gross, as well as a 2nd place in the overall net.

6 & Under Category

The 6 & Under Division saw six players compete, with Theo Oderinde using his Tour experience to claim the victory after his round of 39. Oliver Kayne took the silver medal six shots behind, while Jack Proctor grabbed his first podium finish on the BJGT in third after his round of 52.

7-8 Category

The 7-8 Division was topped by Dominic McKenna (37), as he claimed his first victory since the opening event of the 2020 season after a number of consistent displays since. Harry Schultz came home in second giving him his first Top 3 of the season, three shots back, with Aryan Kapoor also securing his first Top 3 finish by taking the bronze medal just a single shot further back.

9-10 Category

Ollie McEvoy got in on the 9-10 action in this incredibly hot Division – his terrific 37 was enough to take gold on his second start this season, while Justin Chenu continued his consistent form in second just one shot behind, alongside Tristan Evans whose matching 38 just lost out on countback, meaning that he settled for bronze on this occasion.

11-12 Category

A smaller field than usual in the 11-12 Division for South Essex saw Bailee Taylor take advantage and secure himself another gold medal and maximum OOM points, after a couple of recent runner-up finishes. His total of 82 was good enough for a 2-shot victory over Alfie Dorrington, who was another player claiming his first podium finish. Likewise for Alexander Mills, who finished in third another two shots behind to take his first bronze medal.

Junior Open Category

A cracking field for the Junior Open saw two in-form players go head-to-head in the Boys Gross Division, but 2-time winner Henry Daly and the newest victor of the season, Sam Epstein, were both topped by Jake Hinton, who produced a superb -4 round of 67 to take the gold medal on his BJGT debut. Henry just edged out Sam for second after rounds of 70 and 71, respectively.
The Girls Gross Division was headed by Romy Bozier, as she produced a fine round of 80 on her BJGT debut, ahead of Ivy Neary, Linnae Abraham and Mia Barningham (86), who needed a countback to decide second and third. With Ivy and Linnae edging the trophy places recording better back 9s, Ivy’s final nine holes proved the better of the two giving her the silver medal.
The Net Division is not often claimed by the lowest gross but shooting -4 from a 4 handicap, meant -8 was deservedly good enough for Jake Hinton to claim a gold double, ahead of Jessica Neale and Sayan Jetha, who both shot impressive 66s, but it was Jessica’s superb net back 9 that gave her the silver medal and another cracking result for a BJGT debutant.

The BJGT doesn’t slow down, we just head West to Llantrisant & Pontyclun GC in South Wales for the Bank Holiday Monday, closely followed by Royston GC, in Hertfordshire, the very next day!
