A field of around 100 juniors will be joining us to take on the challenge that Kirtlington GC has to offer.

Only three days after our Summer Cup, we are back to our standard events and this time we are taking on two fantastic courses in the heart of Oxford: The Kirtlington and The Blenheim.

The Kirtlington Course – all categories except 6 & Under

With two loops of 9 holes, the 18-hole Kirtlington starts each loop with a generous Par 5. Standout holes include the 3rd, a Par 4 played to a green set in the most picturesque part of the course, beside the Oxford Canal;  the two-tiered split fairway on the 6th; the 12th, a short uphill Par 4 with water on the right; the 14th, another short Par 4 with danger left, played to a green protected by trees; the 16th, with its Muirfield-style ‘island’ bunker; the 17th with its Alister MacKenzie-style two-tier green which drops at the back; and the downhill 18th, a Par 4 where over-hit approaches will find a colossal bunker, one of the largest in England.

The Blenheim – 6 & Under category

With three Par 5s, two Par 4s and four Par 3s, The Blenheim is an authentic test for any golfer.  The uphill 1st is a highlight, with wonderful views from the green. A sequence of four Par 3s bring your round to a close, each offering target golf and the chance of a birdie.  A real treat for our 6 & Under category.

Event Information

Warming Up:
This is to be undertaken on the driving range, putting green or practice facilities that the club may have. Players are not allowed to warm up on the course before the event.

Caddie Rules
Players are permitted one caddie to assist them on the course; they are there to help with pace of play by carrying the bag, handing clubs and raking bunkers, etc.
Coaching is not permitted, lining up is not permitted, and NO assistance may be given on the green.
Caddies are to stay off the greens at all times.

Pace of Play
This is a very important aspect of the game and one that we are constantly monitoring at events!
9 holes should take no longer than 2 – 2 1/4 hours and 18 holes no longer than 4 – 4 1/2 hours.
It is a requirement that all groups keep pace with the preceding group, NOT just keep ahead of the group behind!
‘Play-ready golf’ – be prepared to play before it’s your turn, walk between shots at a good pace, leave the green once you have finished a hole and mark your card on the next tee.
Unless there is a mitigating circumstance, i.e. a ruling is required (in which case the group behind should be called through), slow play will be monitored and penalised in the usual way. If a group does not finish within 15 minutes of the group in front, a penalty of 2 strokes will be added to all players in the group.  We will be very strict on this rule in 2020, so caddies and players, please encourage your playing partners to play at the recommended speed.

Rules:
All events are played using standard R&A strokeplay rules. It is a player’s and caddie’s responsibility to learn the rules of golf, and penalties will be applied if rules are broken.
Here is a link to the R&A website, where you will find great videos explaining the 2019 rule changes. https://www.randa.org/

Distance Measuring Devices:
Range finders and GPS devices are allowed, as long as they measure distance only.

Academy Rules
6&Under and 7-8 age groups have the following ‘Academy Rules‘; these are designed to keep the game fun, to stop younger players becoming demoralised and keep play moving:

  • 10-Shot maximum per hole
  • After 3 failed shots to escape a bunker, players may take a free drop to the side of the hazard, only counting the 3 failed shots.
  • All water hazards are considered ‘Lateral’, so take a penalty drop to the side of the hazard where possible, but should a stream cross the hole, a drop may be taken on the other side of the hazard (meaning players don’t have to hit over the water a second time).
  • Out of Bounds is considered a ‘Lateral Hazard’, so drop a ball back in play 2 club lengths from where the original shot crossed the boundary, with a 1-shot penalty.
  • Caddies may help tee the ball up when playing from the tee, although lining up is not permitted (rule 10.2b, as above).  Caddies may mark their player’s ball on the green and attend flags; it is hoped that players will learn these skills as they play on the Tour.
