Superb surfaces and good running fairways make The Bedford an ideal venue for an early season BJGT event, and while conditions were very windy for the most part (and one downpour in the morning!), the course was very playable.

Given the quantity of rain that we’ve had in recent weeks and the number of course closures at the moment, The Bedford is a wonderful venue that we look forward to returning to each year, and the juniors competing certainly made the most of it to put on an amazing display of golf as they get their seasons underway.

6 & Under Category

Marcus Karim made his first start of the 2020 season and promptly started with a bang, making an eagle 3 on the Par 5 second hole on his way to a 7-shot victory over Theo Oderinde, who added a runner-up trophy to his trophy cabinet after claiming the Winter Cup at the beginning of the week.

7-8 Category

Alexander Dunmall continued his consistent start to 2020 to take the win in the 7-8 Division, as the only player to break the 40 barrier. He carded a round of 39, two shots in front of Dylan Barney who also made a cracking start to his season. Noah Hamer has obviously been using and testing his Dad’s new Awesome Golf system over the winter, as he took third place after a countback with Jenson Ringer.

Jasmine Ren showed that the girls are also up for the challenge, as she claimed top spot in her duel with Georgia Groves.

There are plenty of players who will be staking a claim for trophies in this division, so the season is already looking like an exciting one!

9-10 Category

Wow – pretty much sums up the Boys 9-10 section, as four players tied at the top on 43, meaning that countback was required to decide the final places!

Matthew Whitaker came out on top of the calculations, ahead of Zahn Bopiah in second, Jack Stockton’s card left him in third, while Michael Haywood was unfortunately the one outside the trophy places, but still had a fantastic round.

The girls section was almost as close, as Sapphire Boyce and Lucie Strnadova were only separated by a single shot after rounds of 47 and 48, respectively, to give them the Top 2 places.

This is another division that is sure to run down to the wire with so many players all striving for maximum points and the OOM trophy at the end of it.

11-12 Category

Two events into the 11-12 season and the division so far is all about Ronnie Groves (77)! After taking the honours both days at the Winter Cup, he followed up those victories with another at The Bedford, albeit by just a single shot from Bailee Taylor (78) and Josh Gardner (78), respectively, who showed that Ronnie isn’t going to have it all his own way this year, as they required a countback to separate them into second and third.

Junior Open Category

Luca Randall claimed his first victory of 2020 in the Junior Open Net Division, as he lead from the first group, with his 68 good enough to see off the whole field coming in behind him, as a 4-way tie of 71s saw a countback separate Harry O’Shea, Ciara Rushmer, Tristan Evans and Ciara Egan in that order for the places.

The Girls Gross Division showed that this season has the potential to be the best yet! With 10 girls competing (almost a third of the field), it was Ciara Egan (77) who came out on top ahead of Ciara Rushmer (78) and Freya Coughlan (82) in third, with all three finishing in the Top 8 overall, so hopefully we see this continue and grow over the season.

The Boys Gross Division saw Harry O’Shea take the win on his first start of the season with a solid round of 76, Micah Blowers showed that he is bound to be a force in the race for the OOM title this year, two shots back in second, and Tyler Weaver took third.

With the Winter Cup bonus points giving players an early boost, the start of the regular Tour events is now underway and shows that we are in for an amazing season!

Two 4-way ties on the day in different divisions, plus numerous other countbacks, show that the level of golf across the divisions on the BJGT is incredible and it’s this level of competition, on different and challenging courses, together with the opportunity to develop friendships and forge new ones, that will improve everyone’s game.

Test yourself on the BJGT – we are confident that you are going to enjoy it!
