Swansea Bay: results, report and photos

Easter Sunday 21st April 2019 was a special day for one of Wales’s oldest golf courses: Swansea Bay Golf Club, now in its 127th year, finally held its very first Junior Open! This was also the first affiliated event for the British Junior Golf Tour and we are delighted that it attracted 79 participants from around the UK, on a glorious bank holiday weekend.
The opening shot of the day was played by Swansea Bay’s junior captain, Kyle Williams, in the Junior Open (Under 18) category.
Well done to everyone who played some tremendous golf around a challenging links course!
Lester McCalmon, junior organiser at Swansea Bay, oversaw the running of the event on the day and said: "The event was organised in a very professional way by the BJGT and Swansea Bay Golf Club will be forever thankful for the opportunity to be part of the Tour. We hope that everyone enjoyed our first ever event as much as we enjoyed hosting it and you."

6/Under Age Group

Sebastian Duffield (Windlesham GC) headed the field yet again, with a fine 47 over 12 holes, playing off the blue tees (shortest tees). Ronak Alwala (Bourn GC) was second on 59, with George Benitez (Celtic Manor) third on 64.

7-8 Age Group

The 7-8 Division trophy was claimed by Fraser Mackenzie (Inverness GC), after a superb 50 over 12 holes (playing off the black tees, the second shortest tees), making the long trip down from Scotland well worth it! Alexander Dunmall (Kings Hill GC) was in second on 53, with Fraser Walters (Craigielaw GC) just one shot back.
The girls' trophy went to Georgia Groves (Enville GC), who carded 70.

9-10 Age Group

Luca Randall (Cambridge Meridian GC) made it a hat trick in the 9-10 Division (playing off the red tees), after a solid 53 over 12 holes. Muhammad-Ammaar Mirza (Harpenden Common GC) came home in second with 57, while Ellis Kerr (Gog Magog) and Maxi Moore (West Derby GC) took the third place trophies with a pair of 58s.
Maisie Whittall (Gaudet Luce GC) won the girls' trophy with an excellent 55.

11-12 Age Group

The 11-12 age group (playing 18 holes off the red tees) saw Owen Williams (Southerndown GC) top the leaderboard with a fine 75, with Ryan Gavin (Coventry GC) claiming second with 77, and William Pontin (Pyle & Kenfig GC) just another shot further back.

Junior Open Category

The main Junior Open (boys playing off the white tees, girls playing off the red tees) was won by Brodi Lewis, just before his 13th birthday. Brodi plays at Southerndown Golf Club, but is also a member at Swansea Bay, which meant that Swansea Bay had a winner of their first ever open event. Brodi played a round that any scratch player would be happy with, coming in with a gross 75, for a round of +3. Micah Blowers (Colchester GC) was second just one shot back, with Joshua Westcott (Ashburnham GC) third on 81. To make it a clean sweep in the Junior Open category, the net event was won by Morgan Mellin of Swansea Bay, with a net score of 61. Joshua Westcott and Brodi Lewis were second and third net, respectively.

The British Junior Golf Tour heads back to Bourn GC in Cambridgeshire, for the largest event of the season to date, on Sunday, 5 May. See you there!
