IMGA Junior World Championships 2021 Qualifier: Event Report

It was a very early morning for the 15-18 and 13-14 age groups, starting from both the 1st & 10th tees, with the first groups out at 7 am.

The Bourn Golf & Country Club clubhouse is currently undergoing major extension and refurbishment, but the course was in fabulous condition and the near-perfect playing conditions, albeit slightly cooler and fresher first thing, made for an exciting day, with some low scoring expected.

The Boys 15-18 Division
The Boys 15-18 Division provided just that, as Harry Flynn (Epping) continued his great form and topped the table with a stunning 3-under total of 69, which started with three birdies, to secure the first qualifying place in the 2021 IMG Academy Junior World Championships. Jake Sowden (Read School) followed him home in second, having three birdies of his own inside the first three holes and finishing one-shot back on 70, while Harry O’Shea (Links, Newmarket) took third place two shots further back.
The Girls 15-18 Division
The Girls 15-18 Division didn’t quite match the scoring of the boys, but both girls in the Top 2 spots secured their qualifying places after matching rounds of 82, with Ava Waplington (Coxmoor) grabbing first place on countback from Salysa Mason (Cottesmoore) with a better back 9.
The Boys 13-14 Division
As with the top age group, the Boys 13-14 Division was always going to be hotly contested with another talented field taking to the course. Ryan Gavin (Coventry) produced a solid 75 (+2) to take the win and claim his place in the Junior World Championships, but again the winning margin was only a single shot, as Charlie Ward (Pretsbury) took second place, birdieing two of his last three holes to jump ahead of Theo Morris (3rd; Links, Newmarket) and Oliver Kelloway (4th; Woburn), who both posted rounds of 77.

With the course clearing, it left the way clear for the younger age groups to battle it out for their places in the afternoon, as they also had a two-tee start running from 12.30 pm.

By the time the younger age groups started their rounds, the sun had cleared the skies of all clouds, leaving wonderful conditions for the afternoon wave of play. With all divisions playing 18 holes, this was a new experience for many players in the afternoon.
The Boys 6 & Under Division
The Boys 6 & Under Division led the way off the 10th tee and were subsequently the first to finish, as three players competed for the honours that saw Brody MacIver (Nairn) take the win after his superb round of 86 to claim his place in the Junior World Championships, ahead of Elijah Gibbons (Prince’s) in second on 116 and 4-year old Leo Gibbs (Hadley Wood) in third place four shots further back.
The Girls 7-8 Division
The Girls 7-8 Division saw two girls go head-to-head to try and meet the scoring requirements set by the Junior World Championships organisers in San Diego and claim their places. Maybel Brooks (Chelmsford) did just that and came out on top of the duel as she carded a round of 79, while Myka Adoh (Hennerton) finished second with a total of 100 to just miss out on qualifying.

 

The Boys 7-8 Division
Leo Boniface (Cuddington) played his way to the top of the Boys 7-8 Division with a fine round of 82 to take his place on the 2021 BJGT Junior World Championships Team, ahead of Marcus Karim (Chesfield Downs), who finished just two shots behind and who will be joining Leo on the team, with Mihir Pasura (90; West Middlesex) taking third place.
The Girls 9-10 Division
The Girls 9-10 Division had three young ladies battling for the two places, but unfortunately all three missed out on hitting the required number to qualify. However, it was Betsy Robinson (Fulford) who secured top spot with a round of 100, Amora Rahul (104; Hendon) followed her home in second, with Hollie Levens (110; Sturminster Marshall) in third.
The Boys 9-10 Division
Fraser Mackenzie (Inverness) took an impressive win in the Boys 9-10 Division, as he fired an 18-hole total of 82 to book his place in the Junior World Championships next year. Joining him will be Darragh Sidhu (Foxhills), as he signed for an 88, while Andre Bethapudi (Chester-le-Street) followed them both home in third a further two shots back.
The 11-12 Girls Division
The 11-12 Girls Division saw Ria Prabahkar (88; West Essex) head the field to take the win, and be the sole qualifier for the Junior World Championships in the age group, ahead of Emily Dixon (93; Thorpe Hall) in second and Bethany Gough (95; Spalding) in third.
The 11-12 Boys Division

The Boys 11-12 Division was always going to be a difficult one to call, but Hayden Sarfo (Worcester) produced the leading round, signing for a fabulous total of 76 to take the first place on Team BJGT, ahead of Sullivan Goddard (Bawburgh), who claimed the second spot after a round of 81. Justin Chenu (Chelsfield Lakes) finished in third place, narrowly missing out on the qualifying places by just one shot.

The Girls 13-14 Division

The Girls 13-14 Division was the oldest of the afternoon players and it was another very tight competition that saw Heidi Man (West Byfleet) claim the top spot, and with it the first qualifying place for the Junior World Championships next July, with a round of 82. Zara Gardam (Shooters Hill) grabbed the second team slot after her round of 84. Chrisha Thapa (Oak Park) followed them home in third, just a single shot behind.

 

As it stands, we plan to hold the second qualifier on 18 April 2021, at St. Ives (Hunts) GC. We know that the players who just missed out on qualifying will be desperate to add their names to Team BJGT representing the UK at the 2021 IMG Academy Junior World Championships, but the second qualifier will obviously be subject to any COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time of the event and subject to any instructions that we may receive from the organisers in San Diego in the meantime. The second qualifier will open for bookings at the end of October, when the BJGT 2021 season schedule will be released. Stay tuned!
