Perfect! Just about sums up the conditions and competition at Royston Golf Club, as players battled to follow in Sir Nick Faldo’s footsteps by claiming the Junior Open title.
Royston provided a very stern test of golf, undoubtedly the hilliest course we have visited this year. Along with the constant breeze, this meant that players needed their full concentration on every shot.
Matthew Bailey held his nerve to card a fine 74 on his BJGT debut and add his name to the illustrious trophy. He used his local knowledge as a home club member to edge out Max Weaver by 2 shots at the head of the field.
Jude Duggan, also on his first BJGT start, fired a brilliant Net 67 to claim the Boys Net title, while Sunny Wang posted a Gross 83 to take the Girls Gross division, with Ankita Anand taking the Girls Net title, matching Jude’s 67.
A single shot separated Ronnie Groves and Luca Randall in the 9-10 division, with the former just coming out on top in a fabulous head-to-head duel resulting in scores of 64 and 65 respectively, for their 13 hole competition.
The result was even closer at the top of the 7-8 division, played over 10 holes from 1-6 and 15-18, as Lila-Belle Nacca required a countback to edge in front of Nicholas Curran following matching 44s, with Daniel Agapito just a single shot further back in 3rd.
There was another superb head-to-head battle in the 6 & Under division, as Dylan Barney continued his great form on the BJGT to take the win with a total of 45, ahead of Sebastian Duffield’s 48, with a 3-shot victory over the front 9.
Let’s hope this is just the start for Matthew, and all the juniors at Royston, as it was for Sir Nick Faldo in 1975!
